Tithing 1: Old Covenant Principles

Featured, Tithing

This is can be a controversial topic in Christian circles. For some it is a non issue, they think, God asks me to do so I do, and so it ends there. Some others believe their 10% includes time and money, others also add all they have given to charity and other organizations and church to make the 10% and consider it the tithe and even others believe in only applies under the old covenant and not under the new covenant, so they don’t have to give. Today, we will try to clear up, a lot of the myths behind tithing. The first part we will deal with tithing under the old covenant, and in the next part we will deal with it under the new covenant. Understand that even though you are under Grace( New Covenant) there are still important things we can learn from the Old Covenant in light of the New.

A)     Principles of Tithing under the Old Covenant in the light of Grace:

Well lets deal with why 10% in the old treatment. Besides the fact that God said so in the bible ( Lev 27:30-32). There is an underlying idea here that in biblical times, a tenth represents the whole. So in giving a 10th of what you have, is giving all to God.

Then the servant took ten of his master’s camels and departed, for all his master’s goods were in his hand. And he arose and went to Mesopotamia, to the city of Nahor. (NKJ Genesis 24:10)
This verse illustrates this that when Abrahams servant went out to get a wife for Issac, it says he went out with 10 camels and all his masters goods were in his hands. Now Abraham was a rich man there was NO way 10 camels could have carried all his belongings. It just shows the Jewish idea of the 10th representing the whole. Thus understand this principle that by giving a 10th, you are actually giving God ALL! Isn’t God generous, he makes it that when we give 10% of what we earn and keep 90% He actually treats it like you have given you all to Him. Let that sink in.

Next lets deal with the old covenant idea of curse and blessings linked with the the tithe:
10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be food in My house, And try Me now in this,” Says the LORD of hosts, “If I will not open for you the windows of heaven And pour out for you such blessing That there will not be room enough to receive it. 11 “And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, So that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground, Nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field,” Says the LORD of hosts; 12 “And all nations will call you blessed, For you will be a delightful land,” Says the LORD of hosts.. (Malachi 3:10-12 NKJ)
Now these verses with the preceding verses have been used to put the fear of God into people to tithe. I will show you the principles here and explain it under the New covenant.
1)    V10 says bring ALL the tithes into the storehouse. This verse makes it very clear that your tithes is for the storehouse. Now what is the ‘storehouse’? the continuing part of the verse … “ that there may be food in My house. Gods house is where you are FED!. This maybe your local church, supporting a preacher/ pastors ministry you have been blessed, and in general God’s Kingdom to fund work to enlarge His kingdom(where there is feeding of others). I know everyone may have differing ideas here but be led by the Holy Spirit.
2)    “And try Me now in this” Wow this is one of the few times I know that God challenges us to test Him! Normally we are told not to test God, but this time he has given us full permission to try Him. So go ahead try Him and see what  He promises. He promises to open the windows of heaven and pour out a overabundant blessing. Amen its there in His word, DO YOU BELIEVE God keeps His promises? If you do then go ahead TRY Him
3)    Now v11 brings out a very interesting point. “ ..I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, so he will not destroy the fruit of your ground….” There is so much here but I will only touch on it. Feel free to ask if it interest you. The idea behind this is that we live in a fallen world. When Adam fell God cursed the ground. The ground is tainted, so satan has control over the earth. Now all we earn, money, possessions etc. Comes from the ground. It is still tainted, so the enemy still retains some control over it. Now, when you give your 10th to the Lord, understand what we learnt earlier that 10% represents the whole, you are actually giving the whole to God! Thus He makes it Holy/ purified etc for you, thus the enemy cannot effect it anymore! Want a biblical example? When the Israelites entered the promise land, there were 10 cities to conquer, the first being Jericho.  The Lord demanded Jericho for Himself( see Joshua). Think does God really need the material possessions? No what God needed the Israelites to do, was to give Him the tithe(10%) so He could make Holy the rest. He loves us, He does things to protect us. Start seeing God as a loving Father and Not as a Judge then this will start making lots of sense.
Lets now deal with the concept of Tithe is an Old Testament thing under the new testament we do not have to.
Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High. 19 And he blessed him and said: “Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; NKJ Genesis 14:18

And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” And he gave him a tithe of all

.NKJ Genesis 14:18
Now the obvious thing here is that the principle of the tithe existed way before the Law( Old Covenant) existed. Abram who lived a life under Gods Grace, tithe to Him.Understand that Malchizedek is picture of Christ because Malchizedek means “King of Righteousness”, and He was described as the King of Salem ( Peace),  which is a typology/ earthly representation of Christ. Before I leave this topic, capture something here, look at the sequence of events, The King blessed Abram FIRST, and then Abram gave Him the tithe. Contrast this to what we see in Malachi. Understand that under the New covenant God doesn’t wait for you to do, before He gives, understand He Now gives and we tithe because of thanksgiving! There is so much here. Ask the Holy Spirit to let you catch this because once this realization hits, you will go from Blessing to Blessing, Glory to glory, and all you do is seek Jesus!

In the next post I will look at the principles of tithing in the New Testament

God Bless

    A Question of Law

    Fri, Apr 12, 2013

In a dispensation of grace, what kind of law – including penalties and punishments – should Christians apply among themselves?

And with the separation of Church and State, what kind of law should Christians promote for their country, that would govern both Christians and non-Christians?

As you can see, this website is pretty new. But hopefully it will soon be nice and worn-in with lots of comments from readers like you. Interesting, funny, and gracious comments. Or any comment, really, except those nasty ones which seem to pop up whenever matters of faith are discussed.
